Admin./ biographical historyEleazer Gidney was a dentist. In 1811, under the altered name of Gidney rather than Gedney, he was apprenticed to Dr James L van Kleeck of Poughskeepsie. From 1813 to 1817 he transferred to Dr Abel Catlin of Litchfield, Connecticut. In November 1816, while still in Litchfield, Gidney advertised a remedy for cancer using handbills with testimonials from patients. In 1817, Gidney began to study dentistry at Baltimore and New York. In 1824, Gidney published "A Treatise on the Structure, Diseases and Management of the Human Teeth" while living in Utica. Gidney extensively travelled within North America and Europe to develop his professional knowledge in the late 1820s and early 1830s. He worked in Manchester, England, New York, USA, and Toronto, Canada. In 1840 Gidney was elected as an honorary Fellow of the newly formed American Society of Dental Surgeons.
