Admin./ biographical historyGolding Bird was a Physician. He was a lecturer on natural philosophy at Guy's Hospital, London from 1836 to 1853, and also a lecturer on medical botany and on urinary pathology. He was physician to the Finsbury Dispensary in 1836. He became a Licentiate of the College of Physicians of London in 1840, and a Fellow of the College of Physicians in 1845. He was an assistant physician at Guy's Hospital, and a joint lecturer on materia medica at Guy's Hospital Medical School from 1843 to 1853. He lectured on materia medica at the College of Physicians in 1847 to 1849.

Curthbert Hilton Golding-Bird was a General Surgeon and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (1874). At the College, Golding-Bird was an examiner in elementary physiology 1884 to 1886, in physiology 1886 to 1891, in anatomy and physiology for the Fellowship 1884 to 1890 and 1892 to 1895. He was on the Dental Board as Examiner in surgery in 1902, a member of the Court of Examiners 1897 to 1907, and a Member of the Council 1905 to 1913.

Scope and ContentThis folder contains 167 autograph letters, written between 1835 and 1900, to Golding Bird (1814-1854) and his son Cuthbert Hilton Golding-Bird (1848-1939). The folder includes letters from Samuel Ashwell, Thomas Addison, John Birkett, Richard Bright, Thomas Bryant, Thomas Calloway (junior), Frederick Le Gros Clark, Sir Astley Cooper, Bransby Blake Cooper, Sir John Rose Cormack, M[ichael] Faraday, Stephen Jennings Goodfellow, Charles Higgens, Thomas Hodgkin, Luther Holden, John Whitaker Hulke, Henry Oldham, James Paget, Frederick William Pavy, John Percy, Sir Richard Quain, Sir Edward Albert Schafer, Alfred Smee, Thomas Stevenson, John Bland Sutton, Frederick Treves, Thomas Spencer Wells and Sir Samuel Wilkes. 1. October 1838. Letter of recommendation for Dr Golding Bird written by Dr Samuel Ashwell, M.R.C.S and lecturer at Guy’s Hospital.

5. Letter from Astley Cooper to Mr Bird dated 8th June 1836 thanking him for performing an analysis and suggesting that Mr Bird publish his findings in the Report of Guy’s Hospital.
6. Letter from Astley Cooper which accompanied the piece of Breast for Mr Bird to analyse mentioned in the previous letter.
7. 7th December 1839. Letter from Astley Cooper asking for Mr Bird’s help in analysing a colostrum specimen drawn from a patient.
8. Note from Astley Cooper informing Dr Bird that he has not received a reply to his previous letter and asking to resend his opinions.
9. Note accompanying a further specimen of colostrum taken from a 22 year old patient.
10. (Fragment of a) note accompanying some Porpoise milk which is to be analysed.

19. 30th November 1839. Letter of thanks for the gift of Mr Bird’s book. Montague Street.
20. November 1839. Letter to inform Dr Bird that he has been made a correspondent member of the Philosophical Society of Bâle (Basle). Signed C.F Schoenbein.

22. 27th April 1840. Letter from l’Institut d’Afrique signed by the secretary general Mr Saint-Antoine thanking Dr Bird for a letter and granting him a diploma. Written in French. Paris.
23. 11th July 1840. Letter from Alfred Smee to Dr Bird for a request for information regarding to a post as lecturer in chemistry. Shaftesbury.
24. 19th April 1841. Letter from C. F. Schoenbein to Dr Bird informing him of his universities requirements for recommendations in order for a pupil to start a diploma. Basel.
25. 9th November 1841. A vote of thanks presented by the Islington Literary and Scientific Society to Dr Bird for presenting a lecture to them.
26. Letter from the committee of the Islington Dispensary accepting Dr Bird’s resignation from the position of Physician and thanking him for his assistance whilst in office.
27. 7th January 1842. Letter from Dr Yelloly to Dr Bird discussing Bird’s latest work in calculi (mineral deposits). Sudbury.
28. 8th January 1842. Letter to Dr Bird asking his opinion about calcium deposits.
29. 19th February 1844. Letter from Dr Schoenbein introducing his compatriot Dr Buhlmann and begging that Dr Bird will introduce him to the principal hospitals and institutions of London. Basel.
30. 28th April 1844. A letter from a French colleague in advance of a trip to England asking for Dr Bird’s help in visiting English doctors like Lister and institutions such as the Foundling Hospital.
31. 11th February 1843. Note from Mr Serdan asking for Dr Bird’s help in writing a series of reports in the London Gazette about trade adulterations in London.
32. 31st October. Suggesting to Dr Bird that he should include remarks published in the Report of Guy’s hospital to his lecture notes that are about to be published.
33. 29th September 1843. A request for Dr Bird to republish his lecture notes on urinary deposits for the benefit of younger doctors. Edinburgh.
