Admin./ biographical historyJames Augustus Rooth was a Surgeon and a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians (1901) He reecived his medical training at St George's Hospital, London. Rooth was a Civil Surgeon in the South Africa Field Force, Senior Honorary Surgeon at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, and a Colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Rooth was the doctor present at the birth of the conjoined twins, Violet and Daisy Hilton, known as "The Brighton Twins," born in 1908 at Brighton.
Rooth's pubilcations include "Sudden death from enlarged Thymus" British Medical Journal 1906; "Case of Blackwater Fever", British Medical Journal 1911; and "Case of United Twins Living (The Brighton Twins)", British Medical Journal, 1912.

Scope and Content"The Brighton Twins, A Record by James A Rooth, MRCS." Record book containing photographs, press cuttings, correspondence and ephemera relating to the birth and life of the conjoined twins, Violet and Daisy Hilton, born in Brighton in 1908. The twins were known as the "Brighton Twins" and were joined at base of the spine and buttocks. The volume was put together by James Augustus Rooth, who was the doctor present at their birth. Rooth wrote a paper on the case for the British Medical Journal in 1912. The midwife present at the birth was Miss Hilton, who became the foster mother of the twins. The volume also includes press cuttings, articles and photographs of other conjoined twins and malformed individuals of interest to Rooth.
