Admin./ biographical historyWilliam Hunter was an Anatomist and Surgeon. He was the elder brother of John Hunter. In 1741 he worked as an assistant to William Smellie in London, and then from 1741 to 1742 with James Douglas, both of whom fostered his interest in obstetrics and gynaecology. Between 1741 to 1749 he was tutor to William George Douglas. By 1743 he had communicated the first of several papers to the Royal Society, and in 1750 he was awarded an MD by the University of Glasgow. In 1749 he was appointed as a surgeon at Middlesex Hospital, England, before transferring for a brief time to the British Lying-in Hospital in 1749. In 1768, he built an anatomy theatre and museum in Great Windmill Street, Soho, were many British anatomists were trained.
Scope and ContentThe collection contains notes of lectures given by William Hunter where the note takers cannot be identified. Within one volume of these notes are also some surgical lectures given by William Cruikshank. Another volume possibly contains the hand of John Hunter. The collection also contains notes on lectures given by both William Hunter and William Hewson.
