Admin./ biographical historyJohn Abernathy was a Surgeon. He was an assistant surgeon at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London in 1787, and later became a full surgeon in 1815. Between 1814 and 1817 he served as Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Abernathy also offered private lectures in anatomy in a house in Bartholomew Close, near to the hospital. The governors of Bart’s built a lecture theatre within the hospital to accommodate his classes.

Scope and ContentAutograph letter from John Abernethy dated at Bedford Row, 2 January 1823 (from postmark), to Mr Mortimer of Mr WH Partridge's, 13 New Hall Street, Birmingham. The letter advises Mr Mortimer on the best way to study anatomy and diseases and suggests also the study of languages.
