Admin./ biographical historyWilliam Augustus Hillman was born in 1820, the son of naval surgeon William Hillman MRCS. He was educated at the London University, became a medical student at University College in 1836 and took the MRCS in 1841. He was elected to a studentship in Human and Comparative Anatomy in that College in the same year. During that time he worked with Mr Stanley and Mr (later Sir James) Paget in collating a new catalogue of the pathology department of the museum. In 1845 he became a Fellow of the College by examination and was elected surgeon to the Farringdon General Dispensary. He held this position until 1853 when he resigned to become assistant surgeon to the Westminster Hospital. He also became Lecturer on Physiology and General Anatomy at the Westminster’s medical school. In 1869 he was elected as a surgeon to Westminster Hospital. He resigned his appointment in 1871 because of ill health with heart and lung disease. He died in 1873 at the age of 54 and was buried in Highgate cemetery.

Scope and ContentVolume contains a list titled 'pathological catalogue - old preparations reput up, begun 21 February 1842' giving catalogue reference number, the name of the original creator/donor and a very brief description of the specimens. Sometimes additional notes say 'returned' and the date or 'all returned. At the back of the volume are report listing estimated total numbers of pathological specimens in the College museum, and two brief reports on progress of conservation of specimens.
