Transcript1469: The lower jaw of a Swan (Cygnus olor) with the tongue and larynx in position. The tongue corresponds in form and nearly in size with the intermandibular space. It is a thick fleshy organ with a broad spatulate and slightly concave extremity and is beset in its mid-region by four rows of blunt conical processes. The base of the tongue is also armed with retroverted spines arranged in a chevron figure. Similar spines occur upon the hinder part of the laryngeal eminence.
