DescriptionPuffer fish, with the crop laid open to show its large size and its connections with the oesophagus.
This specimen was sent to John Hunter by a Cornish fisherman, Thomas Trethowan. It was caught off Penzance Pier on 4 September 1772. There is also drawing of this fish in Hunter's collection, where it is described as 'the Powter, a non-descript species of the Globe Fish'.
