Transcript3452: A Partridge (Perdix cinerea) near the close of incubation, showing the well-developed beak and legs and the plumage of down tufts by which it is covered. The advanced condition of the young Bird at hatching is associated with the power to follow the parent bird and procure its own sustenance as soon as it has chipped the shell. This precocious development is common to Gallinaceous and certain other groups of Birds and led to their being at one time classed together as 'Aves praecoces'.
