DescriptionRostrum of a sawfish.
The sawfish ‘saw’, with its razor-sharp teeth, is used both to capture food and as a defensive weapon. Sawfish swim into a school of fishes rapidly slashing the saw back and forth stunning or killing fish in the school. They then turn round and swim back to eat the immoblie fishes. The jaw teeth are short and flattened for crushing the shells of crustaceans and molluscs which also form part of their diet.
