DescriptionCranium, adult male, showing extensive changes to the teeth and alveolar bone resulting from caries and periodontal infection.
In the right maxilla there is an abscess cavity in the bone which is rounded and extends from the mid-line to the distal aspect of the canine. The greater part of the anterior alveolar process covering the incisors has been destroyed as well as a portion of the palate. The premolars and first molar have been lost ante-mortem and the crown of the second molar has been destroyed by caries. Chronic infection of the periodontal membrane has led to thickening of the cement covering the roots. Infection of the bone is noticeable at the region of the left second incisor and an opening has appeared through the labial surface of the alveolar process superior to the root of the first incisor which extends to the first molar.
