DescriptionCranium of a male, age estimated at 40 years, Malay, from the Rhio Archipelago.
Cranium;
This is a male skull, aged 36-45 as evidenced by partial suture obliteration and large styloid processes. There is moderate dental wear. The right groove for the branch of the middle meningeal artery is very deep compared with the left, and ends in “defect” (or deep arachnoid granulation?) near the mid-line. The skull is thinned at this point and visible on the outer parietal surface as a faint translucent bump behind the right coronal suture; possibly a case of meningioma.
Maxilla;
The upper right canine tooth was lost PM. There is congenital absence of UL2, and the UR2 is reduced and peg-shaped. There are large cusps of Carabelli on the first molars and smaller ones on the third molars. There are large hypocones on all molars and the third molars at least have fifth cusps. There is a distal marginal cusp on UL5. Wear on the anterior teeth is marked and flat, except that the central incisors have bevelling on both the labial and lingual surfaces, perhaps due to occupational wear. In the left maxilla, there is only one tooth between the frist incisor and the third premolar and this tooth appears larger than the right canine. The left maxillary alveolar bone has been destroyed, presumably due to periodontal disease, and the roots have been exposed. There is dental chipping on the mesio-buccal portion of UR7. There is ante-mortem damage between UL3 and UL4 with some unusual deposition on the exposed roots. There is striated wear on the buccal surface of the canine and a pronounced ridge on the lingual root surface of the first premolar. This may be occupational wear with periodontal disease, which is otherwise generalised. There is some dental calculus in this area and the teeth are stained, possibly by betel nut chewing.
Mandible:
The mandible does not convincingly match this individual, but they are very similar. Articulation and wear do not quite match. There is betel nut staining and lingual dental calculus. There is generalised alveolar resorption. LR7 and LR8 were lost PM and wear is mostly in the cheek teeth. The third molar, LL8, appears microdontic.
