DescriptionCranium, adult male age estimated at c. 35 years, from Sumatra showing dental modification of the anterior teeth.
Cranium:
The cranium is that of a male aged 26-35. There are a number of ossicles inferior to asterion along the temporo-occipital suture on both sides, 4 on the left and 2 on the right. There are a few accessory foramina at various locations. The cranial vault is asymmetric with unusual parietal bossing and very “vascular” parietal bones. The foramen magnum is elongated antero-posteriorly and is egg-shaped.
Maxilla:
All teeth are present. The molars all have cusp 5s and some have accessory distal cusps also. The first and second molars have two or three mesial marginal accessory tubercles. The incisors are shovelled. The incisal and labial surfaces of the anterior teeth (incisors & canines) have been filed down and there is a noticeable groove on the labial aspect. Their appearance is similar to “E5” in Hillson’s (1996) (after Romero 1958, 1970) list of dental modifications. Dental calculus is moderate, wear, other than to the anterior teeth, is slight and there is one possible carious lesion on UR8.
