DescriptionSkull of an elderly adult female American black bear.
All teeth lost antemortem. Alveolar process thickened and bone infilled. Very old, noted as over 20 years at death. Braincase sectioned and reattached with wire. Osteoarthritis and cataract in both eyes.
This animal was named 'Winnie', short for Winnipeg, and was brought to the London Zoo in 1914 by a Canadian Lieutenant, Harry Coleboun. She died in 1934. Winnie was visited by A.A. Milne and his son Christopher and has been immortalised in the 'Winnie the Pooh' stories.
