DescriptionThe thoracic skeleton of an infant showing an advanced degree of pigeon-breast deformity.
The sternum and costal cartilages are thrust prominently forwards, and there is a deep groove on either side, caused by a drawing in of the softened ribs closely behind their costal cartilages. The ribs are acutely bent forwards and inwards at their angles, and the eighth and ninth ribs on the right, and the seventh and eighth on the left, have fractured spontaneously at this point.
From a rachitic child aged 12 months.
