DescriptionWet drug jar, Castelli, Italy, late 17th century.
Baluster spouted jar with a polychrome design on a cream ground featuring the arms of the Holy Roman Empire flanked by putti seated in elaborate foliate arabesques. The lid is covered is a similar foliate design incorporating flowers. Near the base, a band is inscribed 'OXIMEL SICILLIT'.
The abbreviated Latin inscription refers to Oxymel Scillae, a syrup of honey and vinegar with squills. Squills are a genus of bulb-forming perennial plants in the genus Hyacinthaceae; an extract of squill, either on its own or mixed with oxymel (a honey and vinegar syrup) was used as an expectorant to relieve chest congestion.
