DescriptionDry drug jar, France, mid 19th century.
Cylindrical lidded jar with the inscription ‘CONF: OPII’ set in a black scrolled cartouche decorated with green and pink foliate motifs, and with gilt foliate detailing. The cartouche is set on a square gilt frame, the corners of which can be seen; below is a swag of pink roses, and above, a figure surrounded by gilt flowers.
The abbreviated Latin inscription refers to confection of opium.
By the beginning of the 19th century, the use of French porcelain drug jars with covers became common in Europe. The forms became standardised but a variety of label designs were offered, mostly in a light and feminine style resembling that used for dressing table items.
