TitleSir Isaac Newton
DescriptionPlaster cast of the death mask of Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727), in glazed frame.
This cast is a copy after an original believed to have been taken by the sculptor John Michael Rysbrack in 1727 and used as the basis for Rysbrack's monument to Newton in Westminster Abbey.
The mask is believed to have been purchased by the College at the sale of the collection of the surgeon John Heaviside in 1829. In Heaviside's catalogue the mask is listed as having been acquired from 'Mr Marchant' in 1800 - this may have been the sculptor and gem-engraver Nathaniel Marchant RA (1739-1816).
