TitleQuagga
DescriptionPainting of a quagga, by Jacques Laurent Agasse, unsigned.
Whole animal, profile to left. In a misty landscape with hills in the background.
The animal is identified on the reverse as the quagga driven in Hyde Park by Sheriff Parkins. Joseph Parkins (d. 1843) was famous in the 1820s for owning a pair of quaggas which he used to pull his carriage. The skulls of these animals were acquired by the anatomist Joshua Brookes and were among the items from his museum purchased by the College in 1828: both were among the items destroyed when the College was bombed in 1941.
