DescriptionThe metacarpal bone of an ass showing exfoliation of a portion of dead bone after the area had been cauterised.
Cautery of the bone is likely to have occurred a long time before death as the development of new bone, to form a cavity for the now separated dead bone, is advanced. The new bone extends beyond the margins of the injury, and differs in texture to the bone of the shaft.
Production date Estimated 1760 - Estimated 1793

TranscriptThe metacarpal bone of an ass, exhibiting similar changes, after having been macerated and dried. The sequestrum is completely separated, and lies loose in the cavity formed by the new bone, the borders of which have grown far over it on every side. The new bone is light and porous, and extends over the surface of the shaft far beyond the seat of the exfoliation.
