TitleJessé Foot (1744-1826)
DescriptionPortrait of Jessé Foot by George Dance, signed and dated 14 October 1798.
Profile, half length to left, showing coat, waistcoat and cravat. Foot was a member of the Company and later the Royal College of Surgeons in London. He is best known today for his emnity with John Hunter, against whom he directed numerous attacks and a particularly venomous biography.
This is one of a series of over 200 portraits 'from life' made by the architect and portraitist George Dance the younger (1741-1825) between 1793 and 1810. The majority of these drawings are half-length profiles to the left. Dance's portraits were described by Joseph Farington as exhibiting a 'remarkable likeness' to the sitter.
Engraved: Etching by William Daniell for George Dance, published in G. Dance 'A collection of portraits sketched from the life since the year 1793 by George Dance... and engraved in imitation of the original drawings by William Daniell...', London, [for the author], 1809 (see related records). A related drawing, described as Daniell's drawing for the etching, is preserved at the Royal College of Physicians.
