TitleJoseph Henry Green (1791-1863)
DescriptionPortrait of Joseph Henry Green by Thomas Phillips, unsigned.
Half-length to right, seated. Head slightly inclined to his left. Wearing black gown with white neck cloth, right hand holds open book, left hand rests on his leg.
Joseph Henry Green was a surgeon-anatomist and one of the original 300 Fellows of the College. He was apprenticed to his uncle Henry Cline, eventually becoming Surgeon to St Thomas's Hospital in 1820. Green served as President of the College in 1849 and 1858.
Initially a history painter, Phillips subsequently confined himself to portraits after his election as a Royal Academician in 1808. Phillips was Professor of Painting at the Academy from 1825 to 1832. This portrait of Green was originally one of a pair: the other, showing Green's wife, Anne Eliza Green, is in a private collection.
