DescriptionBust of Richard Owen by Alfred Gilbert, unsigned.
Owen was appointed as Assistant Conservator to William Clift in 1827. He was an intelligent and ambitious young man who quickly became one of Britain’s leading zoologists. Among the most famous of his discoveries was that of the moa (Dinornis spp.), which he identified from small bone fragments sent back from New Zealand. Owen went on to become Superintendent of the Department of Natural History at the British Museum. Some of the information inscribed on this bust is incorrect. Richard Owen was Assistant Conservator 1827-1842 and Conservator 1842-1856.
