DescriptionPortrait of Samuel Cooper by Andrew Morton, unsigned, late 1830s.
Three quarter length to left, seated in a red chair, wearing a black gown over a black suit, upstanding white collar, black cravat; his hands rest on the arms of the chair. A specimen in a jar and a book are on a console by his right hand.
Cooper was a member of the Council of The Royal College of Surgeons between 1827 and 1848. He was Hunterian Orator in 1832, Vice-President in 1843 and 1844, and President in 1845. His Dictionary of Practical Surgery was a principal text-book for surgery students in the 30 years preceding 1838.
The artist was Thomas Morton’s elder brother. Presented by the sitter's daughter.
