DescriptionPortrait of Thomas Spencer Wells, by Rudolf Lehmann, unsigned.
Three-quarter length, to right, seated; he wears the President’s black gown with crimson velvet facings, its black ribbons in a wide bow at the throat, over a black suit and white shirt. His left hand holds his three-cornered hat across his knees; his right arm rests on a book lying on a brown and gold table-cloth; the spine of the book is lettered - see inscriptions. His hair and side-whiskers are white and he wears gold-rimmed spectacles.
Thomas Spencer Wells was President of the College 1882, and Naval Surgeon 1841-48. Surgeon to the Samaritan Free Hospital for Women and Children 1854-1878, his career was noted for his improvement of ovariotomy. Designer of the Spencer Wells forceps.
