DescriptionSmall figurine of a seated chimpanzee holding a human skull, bronze, cast by H Gladenbeck & Sohn to a design by Hugo Rheinhold, probably early 20th century, numbered 13817.
The ape is contemplating a human skull while seated on a pile of books, one of which is marked ‘Darwin’. In his foot he holds a pair of callipers used to measure skulls. The inscription on the open book – ‘ERITIS SICUT DEUS’ – means
‘ye shall be as gods’.
