DescriptionCompound binocular microscope made for Joseph Lister by R & J Beck, No. 6305, 1872, with case and stand.
This microscope was made for Lister by his cousins R. and J. Beck, who were encouraged to manufacture microscopes by Joseph Jackson Lister (Lister's father), the inventor of the achromatic compound microscope. Lister undertook considerable research with this instrument, isolating in pure culture and naming Bacterium lactis. He wrote, in 1873: 'The object which I employed was a tenth immersion lens by Messrs R. J. Beck, the beautiful definition which was enhanced by the use of the higher eye-piece'.
