DescriptionA large piece of sequestrum from the shaft of an amputated femur.
The sequestrum includes the entire thickness of the sawn extremity, and tapers to the jagged proximal end at which exfoliation was eventually achieved. Necrosis of such large pieces of bone indicates a severe and chronic osteomyelitis of the bone, presumably as a consequence of amputation.

TranscriptA sequestrum, 14 cm (5 ½ inches) in length, from the shaft of a femur after amputation.
At the sawn extremity the whole thickness of the shaft is involved; higher up the surface is almost everywhere deeply pitted and eroded from the destruction of the more superficial and living parts of the bone. The upper limit, at the line where the actual detachment has been effected, is highly jagged and tapering.
