DescriptionAntoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875), bronze, signed A L Barye, after 1852.
Barye is considered the foremost 19th century French artist of animals. He sketched big cats and other animals in the Tuilleries gardens and Jardins des Plantes, Paris. His saying was 'Observe nature. What other professor do you need?' Barye also developed new techniques for bronze casting. The plaster model and early castings of this piece, first exhibited at the Salon of 1850, are in the Museé du Louvre.
