Object nameFemur, periostitis, Morbid Anatomy of Bones - Osteoplastic Periostitis, Un-mounted dry bone
DescriptionA left femur showing osteoplastic changes to the distal shaft as a result of inflammation below the periosteum.
A region of the distal shaft is encircled by various thicknesses of subperiosteal new bone. On the medial shaft these appear to have sclerosed, while in other areas they appear to still be associated with a chronic subperiosteal inflammation.
Production date Estimated 1760 - Estimated 1793

TranscriptA femur of which the lower part of the shaft is enlarged by the superficial formation of new bone around it (osteoplastic periostitis). The formation appears to have taken place in distinct stages, nodules of finely cancellous bone having been deposited on the smoother and more compact layer surrounding the shaft. Higher up, the middle of the shaft is slightly enlarged by a thin layer of compact bone which has completely coalesced with the original wall.
