DescriptionPartial reconstruction of a Lillehei-De Wall cardiopulmonary bypass unit, with original Sigmamotor T6S dual peristaltic pump unit, by Sigma Engineering, Middleport NY, 1957.
This is a partial reconstruction of the first heart-lung bypass machine used in Britain in 1957. The design was developed by Clarence Walton Lillehei (1918-1999) and Richard DeWall at the University of Minnesota in 1956. Sheffield surgeon Judson Chesterman visited Lillehei and De Wall in Minneapolis to learn their new techniques of cardiopulmonary bypass. He purchased the Sigmamotor pump whilst there, and on returning to Sheffield had the rest of the apparatus constructed locally by Cliff Lambourne. It was first used clinically in February 1957. In the 1980s the apparatus was reconstructed to the original plans by Jake Alderson and Cliff Lambourne.
