DescriptionPortrait of John Hunter, line engraving by William Sharp after Joshua Reynolds, 1788.
William Sharp (1749-1824) encouraged Hunter to sit for Sir Joshua Reynolds, and produced a highly successful engraving of the resulting portrait. After Sharp's death the plate was purchased by the Museum Conservator, William Clift, who planned to sell prints to raise funds for a memorial to Hunter. The plate was bought when Clift died by Thomas Stone, an Assistant in the College Library, who continued to sell prints from the badly worn plate for his own profit (see related records).
