DescriptionThe right radius and ulna of a lion showing changes to the joint surfaces of the elbow as a result of chronic osteoarthritis.
The margins of the proximal joint surfaces of both bones have been covered with irregular new bone. On the medial surface of the trochlea notch, corresponding with the trochlea of the humerus, the porous new bone has become eburnated as a result of the degeneration of the articular cartilage and its contact with the articular surface of the distal humerus. These changes are typical of chronic osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that would have produced stiffness and pain in the elbow of this animal.
One of four specimens from the same animal (see related records). The source of this animal is not recorded by Hunter, but he is known to have received animals from the Royal Menagerie and from private menageries in London.
Production date Estimated 1760 - Estimated 1793
