DescriptionGold Medal of the Royal Society of Medicine, by Edward Carter Preston, 1956.
Obverse: Hygieia lays a laurel wreath on the head of a male figure who kneels at her feet, holding a lighted lamp. Hygieia holds a dish and has a serpent entwined around her arm.
Reverse: The centaur Chiron teaches the young Asclepius: the boy holds a poppy head and at his waist a spring pours water through a lion-head fountain. A snake is coiled beneath the centaur.
Presented to Sir Gordon Gordon-Taylor in 1956.
