DescriptionDrawing of a harbour porpoise, by William Bell, unsigned and undated, before 1787.
Described in Hunter's paper on the oeconomy of whales as 'another species of Grampus, which was caught in the river Thames, fifteen years ago [i.e. in about 1772]' (Hunter 'Works', Vol. 5, p. 22).
This drawing was engraved by James Basire for publication with John Hunter's 'Observations on the Structure and oeconomy of Whales' in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Volume 77 (1787), pp. 371-450, Plate 17. The engraving was republished in volume 5 of Hunter's collected works (1837), Plate 45.
