TitleThe College Mace
DescriptionCeremonial mace, silver-gilt, by Philip Rundell for Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, London, 1822.
The head is surmounted by a crown under which are the Royal cypher, rose, shamrock, thistle and emblem of the House of Hanover, resting upon caryatid brackets above a knopped stem. The mace is inscribed 'Ex munificentia Augustissimi Monarchae George IV Dei Gra: Britanniarum Regis &c Collegii Regalis Chirurgorum Patroni Optimi An.Dom.MDCCCXXII Everado Home, Baronetto, Primo Praeside'. The mace was gifted by King George IV to the College in 1822, to mark the granting of the College's second Royal Charter. Under the terms of this charter the title of Master was changed to President, the Governors were styled Vice-Presidents and the Court of Assistants became the Council of the College. Sir Everard Home was the first President of the College.
This mace is still the principal instrument of office for the College, and is used for occasions such as Council meetings, College lectures and Diplomates' ceremonies.
