DescriptionPortrait of Phyllis George, by Jane Brettle, 2008.
Phyllis George was the first woman to be elected to the Council of the College. She trained at the Royal Free Hospital, gaining her MRCS in 1948. She became a Fellow of the College in 1953. Phyllis George was elected to the College Council in 1979, and served until 1991. She was Vice-President from 1988 to 1991. She also served as a member of the Court of Examiners of the College.
This is one of six portraits of women surgeons acquired by the College from the artist Jane Brettle in 2008 (see related records). Derived in part from an earlier project by Brettle entitled 'airside', the portraits were influenced in their formal and aesthetic quality by the portraits of the late 18th early 19th century painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. They consist of half or three-quarter length poses, with particular consideration given to situation, detail, colour and scale. The subjects are portrayed in settings that relate to their professional work - in this case, as surgeons and as elected members of the Council of the College. Phyllis George was photographed in the Council Room of the College, in front of the portrait of John Hunter by Sir Joshua Reynolds.
