DescriptionPortrait of Leela Kapila, by Jane Brettle, 2008.
After graduating in medicine from the Christian Medical College, Vellore, India, Leela Kapila came to England in 1962 and trained in surgery under the guidance of Mr AJ Walton. In 1966 she became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and did her specialist training at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London. In 1974 Leela was appointed Consultant Paediatric Surgeon to the Children’s, later University Hospital and City Hospital in Nottingham till her retirement in 2002. Her special interests were neonatal and oesophageal surgery. From 2000 to 2002 Leela served as President of the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons. In 1989 she was appointed to the Court of Examiners and elected to Council in 1992 becoming Senior Vice-President in 2003. She was awarded the OBE for services to surgery in 1996.
This is one of six portraits of women surgeons acquired by the College from the artist Jane Brettle in 2008 (see related records). Derived in part from an earlier project by Brettle entitled 'airside', the portraits were influenced in their formal and aesthetic quality by the portraits of the late 18th early 19th century painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. They consist of half or three-quarter length poses, with particular consideration given to situation, detail, colour and scale. The subjects are portrayed in settings that relate to their professional work - in this case, as surgeons and as elected members of the Council of the College. This photograph was taken in the Wolfson Surgical Skills Centre at the College, a location which reflects the sitter's interest in surgical training.
