DescriptionPortrait of Linda de Cossart, by Jane Brettle, 2008.
Linda de Cossart graduated in medicine from the University of Liverpool in 1972, and began training for a surgical career in Merseyside. She became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1978 and after a period of full time research gained by thesis, a ChM from Liverpool on the subject of venous disease. She was appointed as Consultant General Surgeon with an interest in vascular surgery at the Countess of Chester Hospital in 1988. As well as her clinical commitments, she has been closely involved with the changes in surgical education. She was elected to Council in 1999 and became Vice-President in 2008.
This is one of six portraits of women surgeons acquired by the College from the artist Jane Brettle in 2008 (see related records). Derived in part from an earlier project by Brettle entitled 'airside', the portraits were influenced in their formal and aesthetic quality by the portraits of the late 18th early 19th century painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. They consist of half or three-quarter length poses, with particular consideration given to situation, detail, colour and scale. The subjects are portrayed in settings that relate to their professional work - in this case, as surgeons and as elected members of the Council of the College. The portrait of Linda de Cossart was taken in the operating theatre of the Countess of Chester Hospital.
