Object namecanopic jars
DescriptionStopper for Egyptian calcite canopic jar, decorated with the god Imset who was the protective deity of the liver, probably from the 18th Dynasty (1567-1320 BC)
This stopper probably dates from the 18th Dynasty (1567-1320 BC). However the jar itself is of later date, probably 19th Dynasty (c. 1320-1200 BC) or 26th Dynasty (c. 664-525 BC). This mismatching is not unusual as tomb robbers and unscrupulous dealers often put together unrelated sets for their buyers.
This jar (and its pair) were formerly the property of the surgeon Sir John Bland-Sutton (1855-1936) and were displayed in his consulting rooms.
