TitleAnne Hunter (1742-1821)
DescriptionPortrait of Anne Hunter (nee Home), by John James Masquerier, oil on canvas, unsigned, early 19th century.
Half length, standing with face turned to right. She wears a velvet coat and hat with black feathers, both trimmed in gold, and a white lace collar.
Anne Hunter was the wife of the surgeon and anatomist John Hunter (1728-1793). After John Hunter's death Anne was left in dire financial straits, and it was only the belated intercession of the government, which was persuaded to buy the Hunterian Collection for £15,000 in 1799, that saved her from poverty. Thereafter she enjoyed a comfortable if modest life, building her reputation as a poet and lyricist. The date of this portrait is not known, but from her appearance and dress it seems likely that it was painted in the first decade of the 19th century.
