DescriptionWooden reconstruction model of the brain of a cockroach made by Edwin Tulley Newton, late 19th century.
This model was made by using serial microscopical sections scaled up and cut out of wooden sheets. This system, known as the reconstruction method, was commonly used for the manufacture of wax embryological models, notably by the German firm Ziegler in the latter half of the 19th century. This model was made by the British palaeontologist and zoologist Edwin Tulley Newton. In the Annual Report for 1914 the Conservator Arthur Keith commented that Newton had independently developed the same system at a later date, and that this model of the brain of a cockroach represented his first experiment with the system.
