Scope and ContentNotes, case notes, manuscripts and other volumes recording Lister's observations on individual cases and procedures:
1) Notes and drawings on supperation, 1851 - 1907, bound into a volume. The notes are divided into 8 sections: Drawings of pus corpuscles 1851-1853; Experiments made in Edinburgh 1859; Experiments with white of egg 1861; Experiments on supperation of blood, 1864; Notes on two cases of Pyoemia, 1864; Experiments on the histology of supperation, 1865; Experiments on horses blood, 1875; Unfinished fragment of a paper, to 1907.
2) Drafts, drawings and notes for (18 pages) of specimens including movement of the Iris, Lamprey, Tench, Star fish and sperm fluid of the cock studied under the microscope, 1850 - 1858. [Former Ref. Folder 2]
3) Notes of cases taken by Lister, student number 351, for the Fellowe's Clinical Medal at University College Hospital 1851. Cases include: Rosey Russell, Matthew Kelly, Thomas Young, William Lacey, James Beach, William Woodward, John Foster, James Chappell, Ann Balcomb, George Crockett, Temperance Ludby, M A Hatchett, John Johnson, Fanny Robinson, William Hughes, Joseph Louch, Patrick Conway, John Dobson and William Fame. 6) Statistics, list, letters and notes relating to Lister's work 1861 - 1867 including: figures for numbers of operations, deaths and cases of particular illnesses on the wards each year 1861-1867; table giving the positions of bifurcation of aorta in relation to vertebra of 17 adult patients; aortic torniquet; notes for Glasgow Royal Infirmary pathological report 15 Jan 1866; List of compound fractures in Ward 26 since May1866 and list of those treated on Lister's ward 19 May 1866 - 19 Sept 1866; lists of operations and results 1864 and 1867. 7) Bundle of papers and manuscripts written in both Lister and Mrs Lister's hands, 1862-1868. Bundle contains 154 pages including case notes for individual patients and the glasgow royal infirmary, drawings, notes taken at the Glasgow slaughterhouse, notes on the preparations of antiseptic catgut, notes on the muscular part of the neck of an ox obtained from a butchers, calfs carotid 1868, antiseptic ligature of horses carotid 1869, coagulation 1861-63; copy of a letter to B W Richardson 1859; records of experiments 28 Feb 1862 - 17 June 1863.
8) Notes taken by Dr Michael Beverley in Edinburgh during his attendance of Lister's lectures and practical sessions. The volume includes a letter from Lister dated 8 December 1871; notes on the visits to the wards of the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh and the cases studied there; notes on Lister's antiseptic treatment and notes from cases of Lister's private patients. The back of the volume contains a letter relating to the donation of the volume in 1927 and notes on cases studied by Dr Beverley whilst visiting the wards of Rotunda Hospital, Dublin, 1871.
9) 4 volumes of Lister's Commonplace books, 1870-1873; 1873-1879; 1878 - 1885; 1886 - 1899. The volumes record Lister's work during the periods listed. 10) 100 pages of notes and letters on Iodide Gauze 1882 - 1888 including: notes written at Watson Cheyne's direction 22 Dec 1882; letter from Watson Cheyne on the results of his experiments with Iodide gauze 6 Sept 1867; letter from Mary Watson Cheyne about her husbands illness and giving Lister the results of the anthrax experiments 16 Sept 1867; notes on the inhibiting power of B Naphtol; details of experiment on bio-iodide gauze, mercuric iodide gauze and microscopic observations of gauzes on blood; recipes and records of observations of bacteria.
