Admin./ biographical historyThe Court of Assistants was the governing body of the Company of Surgeons. It consisted of twenty-one men, out of whom a Master and two Wardens were elected annually. The Court elected the Court of Examiners. Although the Assistants were supposed to meet every month, in 1748 they agreed they should only meet when summoned by the Court of Examiners, and control of the Company thus passed to the Court of Examiners.
