Admin./ biographical historyThe Court of Examiners held the exams for membership of the Company of Surgeons. The exams were usually held after a seven year apprenticeship and attendance on medical schools and a hospital, though these rules were not always strictly adhered to. The exams took the form of a viva voce.
The Court consisted of ten men, who were elected for life by the Court of Assistants. They always included the Master and the two Wardens of the Company. From 1748 to 1800 the Court of Examiners took control of the Company as the Court of Assistants, the governing body, decided to meet only when summoned by the Court of Examiners. the Court of Examiners did not keep any minutes of their meetings during this period.
