Personal diaries detailing St John Dudley Buxton's experiences as a serving doctor and surgeon during both World Wars. The two First World War diaries cover Buxton's work with the forces in France and Macedonia; the three Second World War diaries detail his work in France and the Middle East. Volume 1 is Buxton's original war diary; it includes the following note by Buxton: 'Day to day diaries were kept but reading them nearly 50 years later are devoid of interest, only the first book covering the period Aug 1914 to March 1915 is kept'. Volumes 2-4 have been assembled retrospectively by Buxton. They include autobiographical summaries, newspaper clippings, photographs, drawings, programmes, pamphlets, letters, cards and other ephemera. Volume 5 is an annotated photograph album covering the period of the Second World War.
