Admin./ biographical historyThe Court of Examiners initially met every two weeks to examine candidates for membership of the Company (the diploma exam) as well as naval and army surgeons, mates and assistants. In 1852 they began to hold exams every week and then over two days each week. These volumes are a continuation of the earlier Examination Books kept by the Company of Surgeons (See also COS/2/1-2).
Scope and ContentVolumes list the date, examiners present, names of candidates, fees paid and qualifications granted, e.g. diploma, India Service, (naval) surgeon, regimental surgeon, (naval) surgeon's 1st mate, 2nd mate or 3rd mate, and the rate (1st-7th), which refers to the type of ship they were allowed to work on, hospital assistant, or 'referred', which means they did not pass.
