Admin./ biographical historyThe College Council has been the College's governing body since it was created by the Royal Charter of 1822. This modernized the College's structure so that the Court of Assistants became the Council, the Master became the President and the two Wardens became the Vice-Presidents.
Currently, the College Council is made up of twenty-six Trustees, twenty four of whom are surgeons elected by Fellows and Members of the College. Two are dental surgery Fellows elected by the Board of the Faculty of Dental Surgery.
There are two Co-opted Members of Council consisting of two representatives from the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK).
There are also Invited Members of Council from the ten surgical Specialist Associations, the College’s Court of Examiners, the Staff and Associate Specialists Grades, the Schools of Surgery, the Directors for Professional Affairs Forum, the Welsh Board, the College’s Professor for Surgical Education and Surgeons-In-Training (ASiT and BOTA). A member of the College’s Patient Liaison Group (PLG) also sits on Council to represent the views of patients.
Council itself is essentially the twenty-six Trustees. Council with Co-opted and Invited Members meets six times a year and Council with Co-opted Members only meets three times per year. Trustees only meetings also take place through the year. All meetings are chaired by the President.
