Admin./ biographical historyJohn Heaviside was a Surgeon and an anatomical museum proprietor. Heaviside undertook a tutelage under the surgeon, Percivall Pott in London. From about 1770-1771, Heaviside was House Surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and qualified for the Diploma of the Company of Surgeons (later the Royal College of Surgeons of London in 1800) on 7 November 1771, and went on to become an Army Surgeon in the Grenadier Guards during that year.
Heaviside set up private practice in East Street, Red Lion Square, before moving to Oxford Street in 1777. In 1793, Heaviside acquired Henry Watson's anatomical collection and established his own museum. A large proportion of the specimens were from cases Watson had attended, and were accompanied by his own descriptions. In addition to medical cases, the collection housed comparative anatomical material, coins, minerals, and a series of plaster casts of famous (and infamous) faces. Heaviside published a museum catalogue in 1818.
