Admin./ biographical historyEdward Jenner was a Physician and Scientist. He was a pupil-resident in the house of John Hunter in London, and studied at St George's Hospital, London from 1770 to 1772. In 1772, Jenner set up a medical practice in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, however he continued to correspond with John Hunter on many subjects, where Hunter encouraged Jenner in a variety of anatomical and physiological experiments. Over this time Jenner continued his investigations into cowpox and smallpox. In 1796, he inoculated a boy named James Phipps with cowpox and then smallpox, who contracted cowpox but proved to be immune to smallpox. After collecting more evidence and conducting more vaccinations, Jenner published "An inquiry into the causes and effects of the variolæ vaccinæ, a disease discovered in some of the western counties of England, particularly Gloucestershire, and known by the name of the cow pox" in 1798.
